The Isabella Stewart Gardner museum remains essentially the same as it has been since its founder died in 1924 leaving her Venetian-style house and collection of artwork to the public.
While the Gardner Museum has made strides toward participating in contemporary life by hosting artists-in-residence and concerts the Museum doesn't seem to embrace children. Family programs seem to have stopped a few years ago and the number 2 tip for parents attending the museum is to remember the "no touch" rule.
That said, older children might enjoy the romantic and dramatic environment of the museum, far different than a white-box gallery. Some children may be interested in the story of the Gardner Museum robbery as well.
